Wilhelm Curtmann (pedagogue)

Wilhelm Jakob Georg Curtmann (born March 3, 1802 in Alsfeld , † February 6, 1871 in Gießen ) was a German educator .

Life

Curtmann received his first training at the city school of Alsfeld, of which his father was the principal . Around 1815 he moved to the Gießen high school and in 1818 to the University of Gießen , where he studied theology until 1821 . He also heard poetry and philology. After completing his studies, he accepted a position as a private tutor with District Administrator Justus von Zangen in Gießen, and in 1822 he switched to the Chamberlain of Laykam in Darmstadt as court master before he was employed as a teacher at a private school for senior sons in Michelstadt in 1823 . During this time he decided not to pursue a career as a preacher, but to devote himself entirely to teaching.

After passing the grammar school teacher examination in the same year, on November 14, 1826, Curtmann became a teacher at the Pädagogium Gießen and in the following year, 1827, at the university there as a Dr. phil. PhD . On November 9, 1830 he received the position of director of the Worms grammar school and in 1832 became a member of the district school commission for the canton of Worms and on June 6, 1833 a member of the district school commission of the cantons Pfeddersheim and Worms.

Curtmann moved to Offenbach am Main on August 15, 1833 as director of the newly founded secondary school in Offenbach , which opened in 1834, and on April 2, 1840, became a member of the district school commission of the Offenbach district. On March 26, 1841, he was finally appointed director of the school teacher seminar in Friedberg . There he was the successor of the founding director Christian Theodor Roth until his retirement on May 19, 1864.
