Wilhelm Custor

Friedrich Wilhelm Michael Custor (born October 2, 1824 in Koblenz ; † November 13, 1858 ibid) was a German portrait painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Custor, son of Wilhelm Custor, bailiff at the Royal District Court in Koblenz , and his wife Eva Katharina, née Lenz from Cochem, studied painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1840 to 1844 after attending the Koblenz high school . There he was a student of Theodor Hildebrandt and Rudolf Wiegmann . After graduating, he traveled to Dresden , Stuttgart , Munich and Paris . He lived with his family in Mayen before he settled in Koblenz as a portrait painter in the mid-1850s.

The collection of the Alte Nationalgalerie contains his portrait of Maria Mosler as a bride , painted in 1855 , which shows the daughter of the painter, academy secretary and art historian Karl Josef Ignatz Mosler , who became a nun of the Sisters of the Cross in Liège under the name Johanna .
