Wilhelm Eckstein (born October 28, 1863 in Lauterbach , Province of Upper Hesse , † July 29, 1936 in Düsseldorf ) was a German painter and draftsman from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Wilhelm Eckstein studied painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1883 to 1885 and 1887 to 1895 , interrupted by studies at the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin . Most recently, he was in Düsseldorf as a master class student with Eduard von Gebhardt , where he became friends with the Gebhardt student Rudolf Schäfer . Having lived in Düsseldorf since 1895, in 1898 he married Else Bosch, a daughter of the painter Ernst Bosch , and worked in his own studio in his father-in-law's house. Eckstein's early painting Holy Night was shown at the International Art Exhibition in Berlin and at the Kunstverein in Breslau in 1896. A female nude that he created in 1907 is in the Von der Heydt Museum in Wuppertal . In addition to painting, Eckstein increasingly occupied himself with the techniques of paper cutting and fretwork . He often drew his fairy tales and animals onto photo paper.

In 1913/14 Heinrich M. Davringhausen was one of his private students; others were Adolf C. Schleicher , Henriette Jonas and Hedwig Petermann , b. Loch Lennich. Eckstein was a member of the Düsseldorf artists' association Malkasten and the Academic Association Tartarus .
