Wilhelm Johann Hubert Effmann (born September 14, 1847 in Werden near Essen ; † May 23, 1917 in Bonn ) was a German architect and building historian.

Life

Wilhelm Effmann, son of Johann Effmann and Margarete Sprunk, was born in 1847 in Werden an der Ruhr, a district of what is now Essen. He received a classical humanistic education at the Royal High School at Burgplatz in Essen .

From 1866 to 1870 he studied philology and art history at the University of Bonn , then architecture at the Berlin Bauakademie , and a few more semesters of law. After completing his studies, Effmann first worked in Münster / Westf. In 1889, although he had not yet obtained his doctorate, he was appointed professor of art history at the University of Freiburg (Switzerland) , which was founded that year , where he also worked as dean from 1891 to 1892 , but in 1898 out of solidarity with other German professors resigned liberal convictions. Effmann was made an honorary doctorate from the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster in 1908. Some of Effmann's most important research on medieval architectural history was only published posthumously by Alois Fuchs .

As an architect, Effmann built the Romanesque Catholic parish church of St. Antoni in the Swiss canton of Friborg, completed in 1894, a new Romanesque west building for the church of Plaffeien (destroyed by fire in 1906) and the neo-Gothic nave of the Gurmels parish church from 1899–1900 .

The house where he was born is still preserved in his hometown of Werden, and Effmannstrasse also bears his name there.

Appreciation

"Effmann was one of the first researchers to combine text, image and building analysis when examining medieval buildings." In his work on the Werden abbey church , Effmann demonstrated the type of building of the Carolingian westwork for the first time in architectural history, and he later helped to research it pursued his two works on Centula and Corvey .
