In 1912 Wilhelm Frels received his doctorate as Dr. phil. (See dissertation below under works ) and then worked as a volunteer at the Schwerin State Library . In 1914 the Deutsche Bücherei was his appropriate field of activity until his death. Wilhelm Fels was initially employed there in Leipzig as an assistant librarian, appointed librarian in 1916 and finally headed the Bibliographies Department from 1938–1942 . Under his direction, the lists Sexualliteratur, Schöne Literatur, Politische Literatur and Jugendschriften were created for indexing in 1933. In April 1940 Frels was appointed company air raid warden.

The bibliographer published the Literarisches Centralblatt für Deutschland from 1924–1926 and enriched it with the annual reports . Wilhelm Frels provided bibliographical contributions for the Goethe yearbook .

The autographs are in alphabetical order in his directory “German poet manuscripts from 1400 to 1900” , published in 1934 . In 1936, after years of effort, Wilhelm Frels pushed through the transfer of booksellers' title prints to library catalogs. Thus, the effort to ensure the existence of a uniform catalog for libraries and bookshops in the German-speaking area remains to his credit.
