life and work

After participating in the Second World War and being a prisoner of war , he began studying English, German and Old Norse at the University of Jena in 1948 , which he later continued in East Berlin as a lecturer for New Scandinavian literature. In 1954 he became a research assistant at the Nordic Institute at the University of Greifswald , where he received his doctorate in 1955 . Due to increasing conflicts with the socialist GDR state and its interference in the freedom of science, he moved to Denmark for a short time in 1958 and then took up a teaching post in Lower Saxony. Wolfgang Mohr brought him to Tübingen for an assistant position at the German Seminar, where he completed his habilitation with a thesis on Nordic baroque literature. Until 1989 he held the professorship for Nordic Philology. From 1992 to 1994 he held the chair for modern Scandinavian literatures at the University of Greifswald. In 1993, Friese was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Greifswald for his complete academic work, especially research into Nordic Baroque literature, as well as for his advocacy of freedom of research and teaching .
