Wilhelm Gustav Goeters (born January 9, 1878 in Rheydt ; † April 17, 1953 in Bonn ) was a German Reformed theologian and professor of church history .

Life

After studying Protestant theology, the son of the cloth manufacturer August Goeters became study inspector at the Reformed Konvikt in Halle in 1902 and completed his habilitation in 1909 at the University of Halle with a thesis on Reformed Pietism in the Netherlands (later published in an expanded version) . During his studies he became a member of the Association of German Students in Bonn . He also became a member of the Bonner Wingolf in 1930. From 1913 he worked as an associate professor for church history at the University of Bonn . After Erik Peterson's conversion to the Roman Catholic Church, he was able to move up to his chair in 1931. After initial sympathy for the National Socialist " German Christians " (he knew Reich Bishop Ludwig Müller from his studies in Halle and was able to advise him in 1933) he later distanced himself and was transferred to the University of Münster in 1935 . Here he supported the Confessing Church , but also joined the Reich Church Committee in 1936 , which the Minister for Church Affairs Hanns Kerrl had set up. In September 1937 Goeters was elected a full member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia , from which he left in 1945. At the end of 1945 he returned to his chair in Bonn and continued teaching after his retirement in 1946 and Ernst Bizer's appointment as his successor in 1948.

One of his sons, Johann Friedrich Gerhard Goeters , was also Bizer's successor as Professor of Church History in Bonn.
