career

Willi Haag's football career began with the blue-white-blacks of Eintracht Trier . In the first year of the Southwest Regional Football League , 1963/64, the young defensive talent made his debut under coach Janos Gerdov in the Moselle town in the then regional substructure of the Bundesliga. In his second regional league year, 1964/65 , he and his teammates Josef Hehl , Lothar Kleim , Dieter Brozulat and Erich Hermesdorf earned third place in the Southwest League. Haag played his last regional league game for Trier on May 14, 1967 in a 2-2 draw as a right defender at Wormatia Worms. For the 1967/68 round he signed a contract with Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the Football Regionalliga West.

In its first round in Leverkusen, the Bayer-Elf won the championship in the west under coach Theo Kirchberg and with ex-national stopper Leo Wilden and thus moved into the Bundesliga promotion round . There Haag and colleagues achieved second place behind the promoted Kickers Offenbach. On the Bieberer Berg, Leverkusen lost the top game against the OFC on June 9, 1968 with a goal from left winger Gerd Becker in the 90th minute of the game with 1: 2. In three rounds, Haag came to 91 league games and scored two goals. From 1970 to 1972 he played for the league competitor Preußen Münster. Due to illness, Haag experienced the replacement of coach Richard Schneider by former national player Aki Schmidt in Münster in 1970/71 and at the end of the round a ninth place with the eagle bearers. In the second year, 1971/72, the cathedral townspeople only came in 11th. In the two rounds, Haag had played 66 regional league games for Münster and scored four goals. In the Olympic summer of 1972 he moved on to Alemannia Aachen.

With the black and yellow from Tivoli Stadium , the defender under coach Barthel Thomas achieved a 26: 8 home record in 1972/73 and thus the “Colorado beetles” reached sixth place. In the last year of the old second-rate regional league, 1973/74 , Aachen did not improve with the missing defender, but the nomination for the new 2nd Bundesliga from the 1974/75 season was achieved. In the two rounds, Haag had played 63 league games for Aachen and scored three goals. In the first year of the 2nd Bundesliga, 1974/75, the black and yellow needed three coaches. The round was opened by Michael Pfeiffer , he was replaced on an interim basis by Gerhard Prokop before the round ended with Horst Witzler . Haag played 21 games in the 2nd Bundesliga and Alemannia took 15th place. The later teacher at the Aachen Couven-Gymnasium completed his last league game on March 23, 1975 in a 2-2 home draw against VfL Osnabrück.

After his active playing career, he stayed with Alemannia for years as an assistant coach (until 1986), amateur coach, youth coach, and also in May and June 1978 as an interim coach in the 2nd Bundesliga.
