Wilhelm Hartmann (politician)

Georg Wilhelm Hartmann (born May 4, 1844 in Immenhausen , † August 14, 1909 in Hamburg ) was a German social democratic politician and, together with Wilhelm Hasenclever, first chairman of SAP , today's SPD .

Live and act

Hartmann learned the shoemaker's trade after elementary school and worked as an innkeeper in Hamburg since 1880 .

Since the late 1860s Hartmann was a leading functionary of the ADAV in Hamburg. After the merger of the ADAV with the SDAP to form SAP in 1875, Hartmann was one of the two chairmen of the new party alongside Wilhelm Hasenclever . After the dissolution of the board of directors, he was an assessor in the five-member central election committee of the party between 1876 and 1878, which was based in Hamburg.

In the 1870s Hartmann ran for a seat in the Reichstag in vain in numerous constituencies . In 1880 a by-election became necessary in the 2nd Hamburg constituency after Carl Bauer resigned from his seat on February 24, 1880. The authorities have banned all canvassing, the election committee has been arrested, and the election fund has been confiscated. Nevertheless, Hartmann was elected on April 27, 1880 by a large margin. The constituency was the first to be won over to the party under the Socialist Act . However, Hartmann only remained a member of parliament until the end of the legislative period in 1881.

In October 1880 Hartmann was expelled from Hamburg under the Socialist Act. He then successfully applied for clemency to the Senate . This put him out of favor in the party and he was removed from all party offices. As a result, Hartmann no longer appeared politically.
