Hastedt attended secondary school in Lüneburg . In his hometown of Harburg (Elbe) , he founded a brewery in 1867. The beer cellar of Hastedts Brewery at Buxtehuder Strasse 35, which was built into the slope of the Schwarzenberg at the time, still exists today. From 1871 he was mayor there and from 1873 senator. In 1887 he bought the Wensin estate in order to produce his own brewing barley there; however, the previous owner, Johannes Schwerdtfeger, remained the tenant until 1892. Hastedt did not take over the management itself until May 1st, 1892. The estate is still owned by the family today.

From 1882 to 1885 he was a member of the Prussian House of Representatives and from 1887 to 1893 he was a member of the German Reichstag for the constituency of Hanover 17 ( Harburg , Rotenburg in Hanover , Zeven ) and the National Liberal Party .

Hastedt was buried in Harburg's old cemetery and in Harburg Hastedtplatz, Hastedtstrasse and Hastedtweg were named after him.

His son Richard Hastedt (born December 31, 1857 - † January 17, 1939), Senator, was also a wine merchant. From 1912 to 1919 he was a member of the Harburg magistrate and from 1920 to 1924 a representative of the "Free Conservative Party". In 1904 Richard Hastedt took over the Wensin estate.
