Wilhelm Laurop (* 1804 ; † June 27, 1879 ) was a German forester who worked mainly in the forests around the town of Sinsheim .

Life

Wilhelm Laurop was a son of the Oberforstrate Christian Peter Laurop (1772-1858). After studying forest for three years, he passed the state examination in 1823 and was accepted as a forest intern in the following year. He then worked in Friedrichstal , at the Seehaus and at the Pforzheim Forestry Office. In 1825 he became a forest administrator in Grafenhausen , and in 1827 a forest inspector in Forbach . In the course of the reorganization of the forest administration, he was only 30 years old when he received the Bruchsal district forestry department in 1834 . When he was transferred to the Philippsburg District Forestry Department in 1846 , he soon had difficulties, although his management had always been praised by his superiors. In March 1848 the city issued a vote of no confidence in him, which is why he asked for a transfer. Another reason Laurop stated was that, as a Protestant in the Catholic Philippsburg, he had difficulties with religious instruction for his children.

His request was granted and Laurop was transferred to Sinsheim on April 16, 1849 . There he worked for 27 years until he retired in 1876 at his own request because of "advanced age". At this point in time he had earned a high reputation not only within the forest administration, but also in social life. Laurop held many honorary positions. For his commitment to the city of Sinsheim, the latter granted him honorary citizenship in 1860 and in 1865 he received the Knight's Cross, 2nd class of the Order of the Tough Lion .

He was also particularly committed to agriculture , advocating the drainage of meadows , among other things . As a thank you, he was awarded the gold medal for services to agriculture in 1859, which was a great honor for a forester at the time.

On June 27, 1879, Wilhelm Laurop committed suicide by being shot in the head. He left an 18 year old daughter.
