The family of origin of the Mac Nevin-O'Kelly of A (u) ghrim (from the house of the Mac Neven of Crannagh) is an Irish nobility that can be traced back to Athius Mac Cnaim-hin (Mac Nevin) 1159, which comes from the family of Celtic prince of Niall-Noigiollach is said to come from.

At the beginning of the 18th century his parents Hugo Mac Nevin of Crannagh (* Dublin 1682) and Honora O'Kelly of Ballynahown came to Vienna and Prague from the house of the Lords of Hy-Maine. Wilhelm Mac Neven was born on October 13, 1750 by his great uncle, the imperial knight, court palatinate ( Comes palatinus ) and imperial herold Sir William O'Kelly d'A (u) ghrim († 1751) of Cullagh and Ballynahown, who as a supporter of the overthrown king James II had fled from England to the continent, adopted and received the old Bohemian knighthood in view of the origin from the noble family in Ireland with the award of the predicate "O'Kelly von Aghrim" and the incolation in Bohemia (dated Vienna 20 September 1753) for Wilhelm Mac-Neven of Crannagh (1713 / 1714–1887) (Bohemian Land Table Hall Books, Volume CCIV, pp. 61-63) and the Bohemian Baron (dated Vienna 14 November 1767) (Bohemian Land Table Hall Books, Volume CCXVI, Pp. 658-664).

In 1767 he inherited his father-in-law's estates, where the family spent the summer.
