The Liberal Republican Party (in Portuguese : Partido Liberal Republicano (PLR)) was a political party during the first republic in Portugal . Its most important leader was António Joaquim Granjo , who was Prime Minister twice.

history

In 1876, during the monarchy in Portugal, the Republican Party was founded , the aim of which was to abolish the monarchy and proclaim a republic in Portugal. This goal was achieved with the revolution of October 5, 1910. The Republicans, now called the Portuguese Republican Party (PRP) , took over the government. With the loss of the monarchy as a common opponent, however, the differences between the individual party wings within the PRP soon broke out. The strongest wing were the left-liberal, radical-democratic and anti-clerical supporters of Afonso Augusto da Costa . When this succeeded in taking over the leadership of the party, the conservative and liberal forces left the PRP in 1912 and founded the Evolutionist Republican Party (PRE) under the leadership of António José de Almeida and the Unionist Party (PUR) under the leadership of Brito Camacho . The supporters of da Costa, on the other hand, constituted themselves as the Democratic Party (PD) .

The PD, first under da Costa, later led by António Maria da Silva, dominated the history of the first republic in Portugal. In order to better assert themselves against this dominance, the evolutionists and the unionists merged in 1919 to form the Liberal-Republican Party , conceived as a reservoir for all liberal and conservative non-monarchist opponents of the Democrats. Since the two historical party leaders were not available (de Almeida was elected President in 1919, Brito Camacho became High Commissioner in Mozambique ), António Joaquim Granjo took over the leadership of the party. In the final phase of the republic he succeeded in bringing the Liberal Republicans to government three times, he was twice head of government himself, and another government of the Liberal Republicans was led by Tomé José de Barros Queirós .

During his second term as Prime Minister António Joaquim Granjo was murdered on October 19, 1921 during the " Lisbon Blood Night ". Deprived of its natural leader, the Liberal Republican Party disbanded in 1923. From it emerged the Liberal Republican Union (ULP) and the Republican Party of National Reconstruction (PRRN) . These parties eventually merged with what was left of the former National Republican Party of Sidónio Pais to form the Republican Nationalist Party .
