history

The first written record dates from 1334 . It is believed, however, that the settlement took place as early as the 11th century , after the construction of the monastery in Sázava . The first known owners were the nobles Hermann and Count von Kolowrat . In 1553 Jiří Kalenic z Kalenic bought the village. The town experienced its first boom under this noble family, until it was finally promoted to town in 1651. During the Thirty Years' War it fell into disrepair and the village saw a lively change of owners in the following years. In 1834 work began on converting the castle. At the end of the 19th century there was a renewed boom and the place was connected to the road and rail network. Industry, such as the shoe manufacturer Bata, settled here.

In the Nesměřice district, the Želivka was dammed in the 1970s . The Švihov dam is used to supply drinking water to the greater Prague area .

Miloš Forman filmed The Love of a Blonde in the place.
