Over time the place was called Broden (1290), Slewen (1322), Zlebin (1327), Sleb , Slebin . The coat of arms, which is reused today, was given to the place when it was raised to the status of a town in 1356, at that time the rule was owned by Emperor Karl IV. The barons of Kaiserstein, who acquired the rule at the end of the 17th century, left the town coat of arms in 1697 change their colors; on the black shield appeared a golden lion with a golden lily. From 1736 Josef von Schönfeld and from 1746 the princes Auersperg belonged to the other owners . In 1848 the Žleby manor comprised 20 villages.

After the abolition of patrimonial Žleby formed a market town in the judicial district of Časlau . From 1868 Žleby belonged to the Časlau district . With the death of Ferdinand Maria Auersperg in 1942, the family branch in the male line, heir to the castle and the associated goods, became his son-in-law Josef von Trauttmansdorff . His possessions in Czechoslovakia were confiscated and nationalized in 1945 by the Beneš decrees .
