The Stone Bridge (Czech kamenný most ) over the Hostačovka in the Kamenné Mosty district of the Žleby municipality is a medieval arched bridge in the Okres Kutná Hora in the Czech Republic . It is one of the oldest surviving bridges in the country.

description

The bridge is 45 meters long and a maximum of 9 meters wide; the lane width is 5.5 m. The structure, which is curved twice, has three compressed arches and, including the parapet extending beyond both ends of the bridge, consists of quarry stone masonry . The bridge forms the only road connection over the Hostačovka in Kamenné Mosty and serves local traffic. Immediately above the bridge the Zehubský potok flows into the Hostačovka, below the Doubravka. The Stone Bridge is part of the national cultural heritage of the Czech Republic.

history

The bridge on the Libitzer Landessteig, an important high medieval trade route, which was probably made from Bohemia to Moravia via Čáslav , Žleby, Kněžice , Vilémov , Libice nad Doubravou , Ždírec nad Doubravou , Žďár nad Sázavou and Velké Meziříčí from Bohemia to Moravia at the end of the 12th or the beginning of the 13th Century. At this time, under King Ottokar I Přemysl and his son Wenceslaus I, the country was expanded and stone bridges were built. The construction, which was large for this time and difficult to realize because of the location at the confluence of two brooks, was probably carried out by an important construction works.

For a long time it was assumed that the bridge was built in the 14th century on the connection path between the Žleby Castle and the Benedictine monastery Wilmzell with the participation of the Benedictine monastery or at the instigation of Charles IV . Since the Libitzer Steig lost its importance at this time to the Haberner Steig leading from Čáslav via Habry and Deutschbrod , it is unlikely that the elaborate bridge was not built until the 14th century. According to another theory, it is said to have been built in the 16th century as part of a pond dam.

In 1991 it was renovated using concrete injection. The long-forgotten bridge was added to the list of cultural monuments on November 16, 2000. A comprehensive reconstruction was carried out in 2017 - 2018.
