history

Rataje probably existed as early as the 10th century. It was first mentioned in 1289 when a Pribizlaus de Rathay was mentioned . After a fire, Rataje was rebuilt around the middle of the 13th century. In 1293 it came to the Prague bishop Tobias von Bechin ; in the same year it was raised to a market village. The Bohemian King John of Luxembourg handed it over as a fiefdom to his chamberlain and court marshal Heinrich von Leipa , who had the existing fortifications in the east secured with the so-called front or upper castle and a lower castle, which was located on a rocky promontory at the mouth of the stream Živný lay in the Sázava.

Around 1365 Čeněk von Leipa gave Rataje to his relative Ješek von Leipa. During his reign, the Lower Castle was first mentioned in 1385 as "Pyrgenstein", from which the names Birkenstein and Pirkstein developed. Čeněk von Leipa probably founded the branch line of the Ptaček von Pirkstein first . It is not known whether Hynek Ptáček von Pirkstein, who is recorded as the owner of Rataje in 1420, was Čenek's son. Hynek was the kingdom's highest court master and mint master and administrator of the royal cities . Through the marriage of his daughter Margarethe with Duke Viktorin , a son of King George of Podebrady , Rataje came to this in 1463. He sold Rataj together with Pirkstein Castle to Bohuslav von Schwanberg in 1487 . In 1524 it came to Václav Robmháp and in 1528 to Ladislav from Malešice from Černožice ( Ladislav Malešický z Černožic ). He was followed by his son Václav and then his son Jan. During their reign, Rataje received various privileges, including the city charter, the blood court and the city coat of arms. In addition, they expanded the so-called Upper Castle into a Renaissance castle, which made it lose its importance as a fortification. In 1604 Rataje Jan the Elder owned Ä. Čejka von Olbramovice, who sold it to Veronika von Sternberg that year .

During a peasant uprising in the area of Kouřim and Čáslav , Rataje was destroyed and rebuilt by the lords of Thalenberg , who owned Rataje from 1636 to 1712. They extended the castle to a four-wing baroque building by 1672. They also rebuilt St. Matthew's Church on the opposite side of the market square from 1675 to 1691. Johann Franz Ludwig von Thalenberg sold Rataje to Václav Oktavián von Kinský in 1712 . He established a parish in Rataje, the seat of which was Pirkstein Castle, which was rebuilt for this purpose in the years 1713-1724. From 1772 to 1922 Rataje was owned by the Liechtenstein family . Rataje Castle was acquired by the Rataje municipality in 1933, which has been using it for municipal facilities ever since.

On December 1, 2006 Rateje again received the status of a Městys .
