Wilhelm Merton Center for European Integration and International Economic Order

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Wilhelm Merton Center researches the aspects, emergence phenomena and practice of European integration and the international economic order. It ties in with earlier experiences and traditions of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main while at the same time adapting to new developments in the research landscape.

The Wilhelm Merton Center is rooted in the Initiatives Center for European Sciences (ZEWi) founded in 1999 by Manfred Zuleeg , judge at the European Court of Justice . Since the 2004/2005 winter semester and the dissolution of ZEWI, the center officially bears its current name.

Its namesake, the Frankfurt entrepreneur and patron Wilhelm Merton (1848–1916), was instrumental in founding the Frankfurt University as the initiator and financier. As a scientific institution, the center seeks to decipher the issues arising from the challenges of today's global society in the spirit of the socio-politically committed Merton. In addition to the legal and economic aspects, social, historical and philosophical approaches are also included in the research.
