Rainer Hofmann

Rainer Hofmann (born June 29, 1953 in Heidelberg ) is a German legal scholar . Since the winter semester 2004/2005 he has been professor at the Faculty of Law at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main, chair of public law , international and European law .

Education and professional career

After finishing school, Hofmann studied history and law from 1972 to 1977 at the universities of Freiburg , Lausanne and Heidelberg . This was followed by a legal traineeship , interrupted by a guest stay at the University of Montpellier I , where he taught as a lecturer in German law and graduated in 1979 with a Docteur d'Université en Droit . Upon completion of the Second State Examination Hofmann was in March 1982 he was assistant at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law , and in 1986 with a thesis in the field of international law to the doctor of law doctorate. In the same year he was seconded to the Federal Constitutional Court as a research assistant . After his return to the Max Planck Institute, it was not until 1992 that Hofmann completed his habilitation , also on a question of international law . After Visiting Professor at Kiel and Würzburg , he received in 1994 a call to the University of Cologne . In the 1997 summer semester , he moved to Kiel University as deputy director of the Walther Schücking Institute for International Law . Hofmann has held a professorship for public law, international law and European law at the University of Frankfurt am Main since October 2004, where he is also co-director of the Wilhelm Merton Center for European Integration and the International Economic System .
