Wilhelm Nagel (goldsmith)
Wilhelm Nagel (born July 29, 1927 in Cologne , † March 30, 2014 in Bonn ) was a German goldsmith .
Career
From 1941 to 1944 Wilhelm Nagel did an apprenticeship with the Cologne gold and silversmith master Fritz Zehgruber. From 1943 he also attended the master school in Cologne as an evening schoolboy, where he was taught drawing, among other things. Between 1944 and 1945, after being called up for military service, he was taken prisoner, from which he was released in summer 1945. In the following years, Wilhelm Nagel worked in various Cologne workshops until he finally began studying at the Cologne factory schools in 1948 . He was taught there by the painter and art professor Otto Gerster and the goldsmith and art professor Elisabeth Treskow - for whom he also worked as an assistant from 1950 to 1952 -. In 1952 Wilhelm Nagel finished his studies. He also passed the master's examination as gold and silversmith at the Chamber of Crafts in Cologne and has been working as a freelancer in the Rhineland since then. From 1971 to 1989 Nagel was a lecturer at the TH Cologne in the field of art and design.
Type and scope of the artistic work
Wilhelm Nagel is a representative of the classically modern art of goldsmithing. In addition to many Christian sacred works such as tabernacles , altars , reliquaries and bishop's insignia , his design tasks also included profane works such as rings of honor , official chains, candlesticks, bowls and the production of individual pieces of jewelry. The DFB Cup , which he designed and manufactured in 1964 and which has been presented as a trophy to the German soccer cup winners every year , achieved particular fame in Germany . In 2002 it was extensively restored by him. Wilhelm Nagel received numerous prizes, diplomas and awards at exhibitions and competitions. In 2008 the Museum of Applied Arts Cologne showed works by him and Karl Fritsch under the title "Schmuckpole" . Most recently, the Rhein-Erft district honored him with the district culture award of 2010.
