Wilhelm Petersen (zoologist)

Wilhelm Konstantin Frommhold Petersen (born May 31 ^{. Jul} / 12. June  1854 ^greg. In Leal , Estonia , † 3. February 1933 in Tallinn ) was a Baltic German zoologist .

Life

Petersen attended high school in Pernau (now Pärnu) from 1865 to 1872 and studied zoology at the University of Dorpat from 1874 , where he was a member of the Corps Neobaltia. From 1875 to 1877 he undertook a scientific trip to South America, in the summer of 1878 to Lapland . In 1878 he obtained the degree of Mag. Zool.

Further trips to Persia (1881), Transcaucasia and Armenia (1882) followed from 1884 to 1890 as a senior teacher, from 1890 to 1915 as director of the Petrirealschule and from 1915 to 1917 as director of the cathedral school in Reval . In 1918 he became district school inspector for Harrien. In 1919 he received an honorary doctorate from the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Königsberg .

Wilhelm Petersen was a corresponding member of the Imperial Geographical Society in Saint Petersburg , 1900–1908 Vice-President and 1908–1918 President of the Estonian Literary Society in the then Reval. There he was the founder and president of the Section for Provincial Natural History and later an honorary member of the Society. He also received honorary membership from the Russian Entomological Society in St. Petersburg, the Natural Research Association in Riga , the German Entomological Society in Berlin and the Societas Entomologica Helsingforsiensis . In 1910 he was elected a permanent member of the board of directors of the International Zoological Congresses in Brussels and in 1912 he was appointed to the staff of the Fauna Rossii published by the Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg .
