Wilhelm Pohl (composer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wilhelm Pohl (born September 7, 1759 in Neuzelle ; † before 1807 in Vienna (?)) Was a composer and doctor of medicine.

Life

At the beginning of Neuzelle, Pohl's life is to be settled between Braunschweig and Breslau. Pohl may have studied music first, because in 1785 a collection of songs was published by Leuckart in Breslau . The undated manuscript of a piano sonata in Vienna was supplemented with variations by Johann Heinrich Carl Bornhardt, who only worked in Braunschweig . Since this is a manuscript that was probably brought to Vienna by Pohl himself, a stay in Braunschweig is not unlikely.

He then studied medicine, where he received his doctorate in 1796 at the University of Vienna . He should have moved there by 1790 at the latest, because from that year his compositions for piano, violin and songs were printed in Vienna. Initially, his works were published by Franz Anton Hoffmeister , and from around 1800 by Karl Friedrich Täubel , who also worked in Vienna . From 1794 his songs appeared in anthologies in Vienna and Prague. This shows that, in addition to his profession as a doctor, his artistic vocation as a composer was also recognized nationwide. According to Ernst Ludwig Gerber , he “has not [been] alive since 1807”.
