Silberkuhl studied architecture , transport and business administration at the Technical University of Hanover . In 1954 he founded the architecture and engineering office Silberkuhl in Essen , which in 1962 became Agiplan ( corporation for industrial planning ), of which he was the main shareholder.

He held several patents , which he managed and marketed in Normko (standard construction and statics), founded in 1959 . His best-known patent was the Silberkuhl shell or the Silberkuhl system in the form of a hyperbolic paraboloid (patent 1956). A patent dispute arose with Herbert Müller from the GDR , who had applied for the HP shell patent in 1954. An agreement was reached in 1961 when Müller waived his patent in the Federal Republic in return for a severance payment.
