Wilhelm Volck

Johann Christoph Wilhelm Volck (born November 18, 1835 in Nuremberg ; † May 29, 1904 in Rostock ) was a German theologian and university professor in Dorpat , most recently at the University of Rostock.

Life

Wilhelm Volck was the seventh of 13 children of Andreas Volck (1800–1888). His father owned a vinegar factory and was close to Wilhelm Löhe , who became his godfather. He studied philology and theology at the University of Erlangen from 1853 to 1857 and completed both courses with a doctorate. During his studies in 1853 he became a member of the Christian student union Uttenruthia . Volck studied Semitic philology at the University of Leipzig in 1858/59 . After completing his doctorate, he first became a private lecturer in Erlangen in 1861. In 1862/63 he became a lecturer at the University of Dorpat , in 1863/64 he was an associate professor, and from 1864 to 1898 he was a full professor of Semitic languages ​​at the theological faculty of the University of Dorpat and was repeatedly its dean. During his time in Dorpater, he was a co-founder of a private high school in Dorpat, where he was also a Latin teacher. In the course of the Russification of the university he left Dorpat and was a full honorary professor at the University of Greifswald from 1898 to 1900 . From 1900 until his death in 1904 he taught the exegetics of the Old Testament as a full professor of theology at the University of Rostock and was again temporarily dean of the theological faculty.

He was the father of the lawyer and national author Adalbert Volck (1868–1948), the adventurer and writer Herbert Volck was his grandson. Adalbert J. Volck and Friedrich Volck were Wilhelm Volck's older brothers.
