Wilhelm Ziegler (* approx. 1480 in Creglingen ; † approx. 1543 in Würzburg ) was a German painter and cartographer .

Life

Ziegler was apprenticed to Hans Burgkmair the Elder in Augsburg until 1502. In 1507 he received citizenship in Rothenburg ob der Tauber . There he worked and completed the altars in St. Wolfgang's Church in 1514 , and paintings for the winged altar in Tauberscheckenbach were also by him.

In 1522 he moved across the Lake Constance region to Freiburg in Üechtland , Switzerland , where he replaced Hans Boden as town painter in 1526 and was granted citizenship. In 1542 he was followed by Hans Schäufelin the Younger from Nördlingen .

In 1531 he returned to Rothenburg and was given citizenship there again. He brought a wife with him, whom he sent back to her homeland. She complained against it, however, and Ziegler was imprisoned until he promised to take her back.

In 1534 he was accepted into the Würzburg Guild of St. Luke . But he still works in Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

He is said to have had a son named Jörg.
