Wilhelm Prinz zu Stolberg-Wernigerode , full name Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Prinz zu Stolberg-Wernigerode , (born July 23, 1870 in Hanover , † January 23, 1931 in Posen ) was a German diplomat.

Life

Wilhelm zu Stolberg-Wernigerode was born as the third son of Count Otto zu Stolberg-Wernigerode (1837-1896) and Princess Anna Elisabeth Reuss zu Köstritz (1837-1907). Since his birth he had the title of Count with the salutation Sublime and from 1890, when his father was raised to the rank of prince by Kaiser Wilhelm II, the title of Prince with the salutation Serene Highness. On January 10, 1910, at Schönberg Castle , he married Princess Elisabeth (called Edda ) von Erbach-Schönberg (1883–1966), daughter of Prince Gustav Ernst zu Erbach-Schönberg (1840–1908) and Princess Marie Karoline von Battenberg (1852–1923 ). From this marriage the son Ludwig-Christian (1910–1945) and the daughter Anna (1912–1914) emerged. Ludwig-Christian married Anna Countess Schlitz von Görtz in 1937 and had four children.

Wilhelm zu Stolberg-Wernigerode was promoted to Dr. jur. doctorate and entered the diplomatic service. Initially he was the third secretary of the German embassy in St. Petersburg, then chargé d'affaires in Luxembourg and then second secretary of the German embassy in London . From 1908 he was counselor and first secretary of the German embassy in Rome , from 1911 he held this position at the German embassy in Vienna . In 1919 and 1920 he was finally ambassador of the German Reich in Austria .

Wilhelm von Stolberg-Wernigerode was a Protestant denomination. He died in Poznan in 1931 at the age of sixty. His grave is in the family cemetery near Wernigerode Castle .
