Wilibald Winkler

Wilibald Emanuel Winkler (born December 25, 1933 in Makoszowy , † October 31, 2010 in Zabrze ) was a Polish politician and scientist .

Winkler belonged to the German-speaking ethnic group in Silesia . In 1966 he completed a degree in electrical engineering at the Silesian Technical University in Gliwice . After three years as a research assistant at the university, he received his doctorate in 1969 and his habilitation in 1973 . In 1981 he finally became a professor and held the post of rector from 1990 to 1996 . Since 1996 Winkler belonged to the conservative electoral alliance AWS . In 1997, under Prime Minister Jerzy Buzek , Winkler was appointed State Secretary in the Polish Ministry of Education for three years . Between 2000 and 2001 he was voivode of Silesia . He then ran for the Polish Senate in 2001 and for the European Parliament in 2004 , but unsuccessfully in both cases.

For his services, Winkler was awarded the Order Lux ex Silesia in 2008 and the Order of Polonia Restituta posthumously in 2010 .
