Willi Bang-Kaup

Johann Wilhelm Max Julius Bang-Kaup (also Willi Bang or Willy Bang or Willy Bang-Kaup ; born August 9, 1869 in Wesel , † October 8, 1934 in Darmstadt ) was a German Orientalist ( Turkologist ) and English studies .

Life

Willi Bang-Kaup was the son of the mayor and lawyer Heinrich Bang and Auguste Kaup.

Bang first studied Oriental Studies in Leuven - Old Persian , Avestian , Manchurian and Mongolian , then also in France , Holland and England . In 1893 and 1909 he brought out a new edition of ancient Persian inscriptions together with Friedrich H. Weißbach and wrote several articles on the subject.

From 1893 Bang researched old Turkish stone inscriptions, the runic alphabet of which had been deciphered by Vilhelm Thomsen , using methods of language comparison with modern Turkic languages and dialects. Together with Josef Markwart, he achieved a breakthrough in the chronological classification of the inscriptions. From 1910 to 1914, Bang worked on the Codex Cumanicus . Then he turned to old Turkish manuscripts from Turfan .

From 1895 to 1914 Bang was Professor of English Studies in Leuven and wrote several important studies on English literature . In the wake of the outbreak of World War I, Bang had to leave Belgium and in 1917 became professor of Turkish Studies in Frankfurt. In 1918 he was appointed professor at the University of Berlin and continued researching the Turfan manuscripts, especially Manichaean and Christian texts. Together with Annemarie von Gabain , he published annotated editions of Turfan texts as well as a glossary on the vocabulary of these texts.

Bang discussed problems in the historical grammar of the Turkic languages ​​in several articles.
