history

The era of the Henneberg family

Henneberg Castle was built from 1884 to 1887 by the landowner Albert Henneberg (* 1818, † 1896) on the "Park Marienhof" on the Alster according to the plans of the architect Pieper. It is a replica of Henneberg Castle in Thuringia, the ancestral seat of the Counts of Henneberg , on a scale of 1: 4. One motive for the chosen model was the name affinity, although the Hennebergs were not related to the Count family. The construction of neo-Gothic castles corresponded to the zeitgeist of upper-class families at the time, as they were in other places in Hamburg, e.g. B. on the Elbchaussee in Baurs Park .

The "Park Marienhof", a 3.5 hectare area that gently slopes towards the Alster, was laid out by Albert Henneberg in the style of an English landscape garden ( arboretum ) with exotic trees from different regions of Europe, the USA, China and Japan. The park still exists today.

The Alster at the Poppenbütteler lock in 1856 by Wilhelm Heuer

The picture painted by Wilhelm Heuer (see right) shows the Poppenbütteler lock with the upper and lower (today Bäckerbrücke) lock weir from 1856. On the right bank of the Alster, on the upper lock weir, there is the "Park Marienhof" and the lock master's house (today Restaurant). The hill with Henneberg Castle did not exist at the time.

In 1855, when the Alstertal municipality was still part of Denmark , the Henneberg family acquired large agricultural areas in the municipality. When the province of Schleswig-Holstein was founded by the Prussians in 1867, the Alstertal community with the village of Poppenbüttel belonged to the Stormarn district . Up until the end of the 19th century, the Hennebergs' farm was primarily aimed at the Hamburg market as a milk supplier with around 150 cattle .

For the reputation of the “knight's castle”, a rocky 15 meter high castle hill was specially built up over three years of work. The castle consists of a main building, a 12 meter high tower, a side tower and a south-facing, terraced porch. In the main building there is a 23 m² "knight's hall" with a 20 m² gallery, a 7 m² castle chamber and the staircase to the tower. A spiral staircase leads to the tower, from which the Hennebergs had a wide view of Hamburg's church towers. Today this view is blocked by the tall trees in the city. The castle is accessed via a narrow corridor around the castle. To give the building an antique look, cracks were simulated in the masonry of the tower.

The castle served the Henneberg family as a family archive until 1907, which was also used by Braunschweig historical researchers. With the dissolution of the agricultural property of the Hennebergs in 1930, in the course of the development of residential areas in Poppenbüttel, the rooms of the castle were available to a song board as a rehearsal room. In 1942 the castle and part of the park were sold to the city of Hamburg. The era of the Henneberg family ended in 1986 with the death of Otto Henneberg-Poppenbüttel because he had no offspring.

The new owners

The castle replica fell into disrepair over the decades due to lack of use. In 1988 there was a risk of collapse and the adjacent road had to be closed. A demolition of the building was considered if no buyer could be found. In 1990 a private investor acquired the building under the obligation of extensive restoration.

In 1991 the building was placed under monument protection, with the entry in the list of cultural monuments in Hamburg-Poppenbüttel : "Henneberg castle ruin with artificial topography , type Folly (replica of a castle ruin), Marienhof 8."

In 2002 and 2013 the owners changed again. In 2014, the use of the castle was transferred to a non-profit foundation "Burg Henneberg". It serves the preservation and use of the building for cultural purposes and is also publicly accessible for the first time in this context.
