In 1912 he passed the teacher examination and in the same year became a school teacher at the one-class elementary school in Rossenthin south of Kolberg. In the First World War he served as a soldier from 1914, most recently as a first lieutenant in the reserve, and was seriously wounded. After the First World War he returned to his position in Rossenthin. In 1933 he was transferred to Kolberg. In World War II he served from 1940 to 1943 as captain of an in Siegburg lying land rifle company . In 1943 he was released from military service for health reasons. In March 1945 he experienced the capture of Kolberg by the Red Army . With the expulsion of the inhabitants of Kolberg, he too had to leave the city in 1945. He first went to Eilsleben , then in 1947 to Siegburg, which he knew from his military service. In Siegburg he worked again as a school teacher until his retirement in 1958. In 1972 he died in Siegburg.

Schultz was an important collector of folk songs and folk dances from his homeland, Pomerania . He published numerous collections, first Tanzt das Volk im Kreis (1925). He gave radio lectures on Pomeranian folklore, for the first time in 1927 on the Deutschlandsender . During the battle for Kolberg in 1945 he lost his entire collection of unpublished folk songs and folk dances. After 1945 he was able to restore some of his memory and published other collections, most recently Dances of Encounter (1963).

He was also temporarily state representative for nature conservation in the Köslin administrative district and chairman of the Kolberger Heimatverein. In 1972 he was awarded the Pomeranian Culture Prize.
