William Allen Zajc
William Allen Zajc (also Bill Zajc or William Zajc or William A. Zajc ) (born November 14, 1954 in San Francisco ) is an American physicist .
Life
Zajc received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the California Institute of Technology in 1975 and his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 1982 . He is a professor at Columbia University , where he was appointed II Rabi Professor of Physics in 2015 .
He investigates the experimental consequences of quantum chromodynamics in heavy ion reactions, for example the formation of a quark-gluon plasma . He is spokesman for the Phenix collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) (2011).
Zajc is a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS, since 1997) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). For 2014 he was awarded the APS Tom W. Bonner Prize for Nuclear Physics .
Zajc was the first to use the Hanbury Brown-Twiss effect to measure the interaction of heavy ions.
