William Mitchell

William Bell Mitchell (born November 19, 1832 in Stamford , Welland County , Ontario , † August 21, 1900 near Alexandria , Minnesota ) was an American lawyer and politician. He had great influence on the development of case law in Minnesota.

Life

Mitchell graduated from Washington & Jefferson College in 1853 . He then worked as a teacher in Morgantown , Virginia , and studied with Edgar Campbell Wilson Law . Mitchell was admitted to the Virginia bar in 1857 but was soon practicing in Winona , Minnesota . In 1859/60 he was a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives . Since 1874 he was a judge in the 3rd judicial district (judicial district) , since March 1881 at the Minnesota Supreme Court , appointed by Governor John Sargent Pillsbury . Mitchell was re-elected to that position three times.

In 1900 Mitchell was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Mitchell was married to E. Jane Hanway († 1867) since 1857 and in 1872 in second marriage to Frances M. Smith (1838-1881). William DeWitt Mitchell (1874–1955) , who later became Attorney General, was one of his six children . William Bell Mitchell died of a stroke on August 21, 1900 on the shores of Lake Alexandria . He was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Winona.
