William Bradshaw, Baron Bradshaw

William Peter Bradshaw, Baron Bradshaw , known as Bill Bradshaw (born September 9, 1936 ) is a British politician ( Liberal Democrats ) and university professor .

life and career

Bradshaw was born in 1936 to Leonard and Ivy Bradshaw. He attended Slough Grammar School and the University of Reading . He studied political science there and earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1957 . In 1960 he graduated with a Master of Arts . Bradshaw was registered as a member of the Chartered Institute of Transport (MCIT) in 1966 .

After his military service (1957-1959) he worked for British Rail from 1959 to 1985 . There I was initially employed as a trainee . In 1967 he became Division Manager in Bristol , 1973 in Liverpool . In 1976 he became Chief Operations Manager of the Midland Region and in 1977 Deputy General Manager of the London Midland Region. In 1978 he became Director of Operations at the headquarters of British Rail, and in 1980 he became Head of the Policy Unit .

From 1983 to 1985 he was General Manager of the Western Region of British Rail.

After leaving British Rail, Bradshaw was Professor of Transportation Management at the University of Salford from 1986 to 1992 . From 1987 to 1993 he was chairman of Ulsterbus , a local transit company , and Citybus Ltd in Belfast . Bradshaw was Director of Northern Ireland Transport Holding Co from 1988 to 1993 . From 1992 to 2000 he was visiting professor at the School of Management affiliated with the University of Salford . From 1997 to 1999 he was director of Lothian Regional Transport . From 1992 to 1997 he was special advisor to the Special Committee for Transportation ( Transport Select Committee ) of the House of Commons . From 1993 until his resignation in January 2008, he was a councilor in Oxfordshire . From 1993 to 1995 and from 1997 to 2008 he was a member of the Thames Valley Police Authority , from 1999 to 2003 its deputy chairman ("Vice-Chairman").

In 2001 he was a member of the "Commission for Integrated Transport". From 1999 to 2001 he was a member of the British Railways Board (Shadow Strategic Rail Authority).

Membership in the House of Lords

Bradshaw was made a Life Peer of Baron Bradshaw, of Wallingford in the County of Oxfordshire in 1999 . In the House of Lords he has been his party's spokesman for transport since 2001 . He cites transportation, environmental protection , planning and police matters as his political interests . Since 2007 he has been a co-opted member of sub-committee "B" for questions relating to the internal market of the European Union (EU Sub-committee B) (Internal Market) . Since 2008 he has been the “Vice-chair” of the “Transport Safety Group”.

Honors

He has been an Honorable Fellow of Wolfson College since 2004 . From 1988 to 2003 he was previously a Supernumerary Fellow .

family

In 1957 he married Jill Hayward, with whom he has two children. She died in 2002. Bradshaw married Diana Ayris in 2003.
