William Callow (born July 28, 1812 in Greenwich , now part of London , † February 1908 in Great Missenden , Buckinghamshire , England) was an English landscape painter , engraver and watercolorist of the 19th century.

Life

Callow was apprenticed to the artist Copley Fielding, where he learned to draw in nature (plein air). He acquired further skills from the sons Fielding, Theodor and Thales Fielding, in the years from 1825 to 1827, such as the coloring of prints and the aquatint technique . During these years he also learned the art of watercolor.

In 1829 Thales Fielding Callow got a job as an engraver in Paris , where he worked with his friend Charles Bentley. In Paris he turned back to watercolor at the suggestion of Thomas Shotter Boys. In the Paris Salon of 1831 he exhibited his watercolor Richmond Hill and was then hired as an art teacher for the family of the French King Louis-Philippe I. For several years he gave art lessons to the royal children Louis d'Orléans, duc de Nemours and the Princess Clémentine. during this time his work became popular in England.

Callow was elected to the Royal Watercolor Society (RWS), the Old Water Color Society , and returned to London in 1841. He began to paint larger works and moved away from his earlier, more fleeting style of his smaller works. He had many students and was favored by the royal family. In 1855 he moved to Buckinghamshire, where he stayed until his death.

Callow made extensive trips through the Netherlands, Belgium, a Rhine trip and then through Switzerland to Italy. He kept a detailed diary of the early journeys with information on people, events and landscapes. These notes enabled him to dictate his autobiography to HM Cundall shortly before his death in 1908.

Callow was married to Harriet Ann Smart.
