William Cochrane, 1st Earl of Dundonald (* 1605 ; † 1685 ) was a Scottish nobleman and politician.

Life

He was the eldest surviving son of Alexander Blair of that Ilk from his marriage to Elizabeth Cochrane, coerbin of William Cochrane of that Ilk. In 1601 his father took the family name "Cochrane".

His parents left him extensive estates in Renfrewshire and Ayrshire , which he was able to expand over the course of his career. In 1641 he was promoted to Knight Bachelor and in 1644 was elected member of the Scottish Parliament for Ayrshire .

During the wars of the Three Kingdoms he stood on the side of King Charles I , who on December 26, 1647 bestowed on him the hereditary title of Lord Cochrane of Dundonald . When it was decided in 1648 to raise an army for Charles I in Scotland, he was sent to Ireland as a colonel to bring home the Scottish troops deployed there. Under the Cromwell's Act of Grace , the English Parliament pardoned him in 1654 against a fine for his royalist activities.

After the Stuart Restoration , he was accepted into the Scottish Privy Council , appointed Commissioner of the Treasury and Exchequer , and on May 12, 1669 made Earl of Dundonald and Lord Cochrane of Paisley and Ochiltree .

In 1633 he married Eupheme Scott, daughter of Sir William Scott. He had four children with her:

  • William Cochrane, Lord Cochrane († 1679) ⚭ 1653 Lady Catherine Kennedy, daughter of John Kennedy, 6th Earl of Cassilis ;
  • Sir John Cochrane († 1707) ⚭ 1656 Margaret Strickland, daughter of Sir William Strickland, 1st Baronet;
  • Lady Grizel Cochrane († 1665) ⚭ 1653 George Ross, 11th Lord Ross ;
  • James Cochrane († 1694).

Since he survived his eldest son, his eldest son John Cochrane inherited his title as 2nd Earl of Dundonald in 1685 .
