William MacAskill
William MacAskill (born March 24, 1987 as William Crouch ) is a British philosopher at Oxford University . He founded and leads several organizations in the field of effective altruism and is considered a leading figure in the movement.
Life
MacAskill grew up in Glasgow . From 2005 to 2010 he studied philosophy at Cambridge and Oxford . From 2010 to 2014 he did his doctorate in Oxford under John Broome and Krister Bykvist on the topic of normative uncertainty. During this time he received a Fulbright Scholarship and spent time abroad at New York University and Princeton . Since August 2015 he has been an Associate Professor and Tutorial Fellow at Lincoln College, Oxford University.
In 2009 MacAskill and Toby Ord founded Giving What We Can. The organization advocates donating at least 10% of one's income and recommends donation targets. In 2011, MacAskill founded 80,000 Hours with Benjamin Todd, which advises people who want to shape their careers around the principles of effective altruism. The parent organization of the two nonprofits is the MacAskill-led Center for Effective Altruism.
MacAskill criticized the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge because it could induce participants to refrain from donating money, including to other organizations. 2015 he published a book Doing Good Better (German Good do better ), in which he puts forward arguments for the effective altruism and represents approaches to the evaluation of aid organizations.
