William Denis Battershill

Sir William Denis Battershill KCMG ( June 29, 1896 - August 11, 1959 ) was a British officer and colonial administrator.

biography

Battershill, son of William John Battershill, attended King's School in Worcester, founded in 1541 . In the British Army he served in India from 1908 to 1914 and then in Iraq until 1919 , most recently as a lieutenant . He then started his civil service career with the Ceylon Civil Service (CCS). In 1924 he married Joan Elizabeth, daughter of Major General Sir John Gellibrand , with whom he later had daughters Jane Elizabeth and Cynthia Ann.

In 1928 he became 2nd Assistant Secretary and a member of the Ceylon Legislative Council . This was followed by posts from 1929 to 1935 as Assistant Colonial Secretary in Jamaica and from 1935 and 1937 as Colonial Secretary in Cyprus , before he also served there as High Commissioner from September 1937 to March 1938 in his subsequent appointment as Chief Secretary of the Government of Palestine .

In 1939 he returned to Cyprus and took up the post of governor and commander in chief , which he held until 1941. In 1941 he was knighted as Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George and served in the British Colonial Office during the war , until 1942 as Assistant Under-Secretary of State and then as Deputy Under-Secretary for the British Colonies. Subsequently he was governor and commander in chief of Tanganyika from April 28, 1945 until his retirement for health reasons . After his retirement on June 18, 1949, he lived in Cyprus again.
