List of governors of Tanganyika (1919–1961):
After the British armed forces occupied the northern part of Tanzania in the First World War , which until then had been under German administration as part of German East Africa , Horace Archer Byatt was entrusted with the general administration of the British-occupied zone in October 1916. After the League of Nations mandate of 1919, in which Tanganyika was awarded to the British, he became the first governor .
The last incumbent, Sir Richard Gordon Turnbull, became Governor General on December 9, 1961, when Tanganyika became independent . After the founding of the republic on December 9, 1962, the previous Prime Minister Julius Nyerere became President and the new head of state of Tanganyika .
