William Dodge Lewis (born January 17, 1870 in Russell , New York , † November 14, 1960 in Lansdowne , Pennsylvania ) was an American educator , editor and writer .

Life

Family and education

The Methodist baptized William Dodge Lewis, son of John E. Lewis and Anna J. Van Ornum Lewis, graduated in 1888 at the Hugh C. Williams High School in Canton , New York. He then turned to studying English at Syracuse University , in 1892 he acquired a Bachelor of Arts degree , in 1895 a Master of Arts degree , and in 1917 he received his doctorate as a Doctor of Philosophy .

William Dodge Lewis married Louise Graff on September 19, 1893. The children Louise and Frederick Howard emerged from the marriage. He died in November 1960 at the age of 90. He found his final resting place in Arlington Cemetery in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania.

Professional background

William Dodge Lewis was employed after graduation until 1910 as a principal at grammar schools, public schools and high schools as well as head of English departments in Syracuse. He then took up the position as principal of William Penn High School in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania. In 1919 he changed to the position of Superintendent of Public Instruction of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania at the Pennsylvania Department of Education, in 1923 he resigned. William Dodge Lewis subsequently served as editor of the John C. Winston Company in Philadelphia, a position he previously held from 1916 to 1920, and in 1940 he was ceremoniously retired.

William Dodge Lewis, who served on the Board of Directors of the Public Education and Child Labor Association of Pennsylvania, presided over the National Association of Secondary School Principals in 1919. Lewis, who in addition, as trustee acted Lake Placid Educational Foundation, membership had in the fraternities Phi Kappa Psi and Phi Beta Kappa held and Franklin Inn Club and the Lake Placid Club.

William Dodge Lewis wrote anthologies of English literature and articles for the Outlook newspaper, the Saturday Evening Post weekly and the Ladies Home Journal magazine, among others . William Dodge Lewis, who emerged in particular as the author of English textbooks, received an honorary doctorate from Susquehanna University in 1921 and the George Arents Pioneer Medal from Syracuse University in 1952.
