William Faversham (born February 12, 1868 in London , England , † April 7, 1940 on Long Island , New York ) was a British actor .

life and career

Faversham became one of the great theater stars in the English-speaking world from the 1890s. On Broadway , he starred in over 40 productions between 1887 and 1931, in some cases of which he also directed. He was seen in the role of Algy in the first US production of Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest in 1895 . In 1915 he made his film debut and also played leading roles in silent cinema, although his main focus was still on theater work and he was an actor in only 12 films in front of the camera. He was nevertheless awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk in 1960 for his film work of fame .

The change into the character roles with increasing age succeeded Faversham less. His Broadway engagements waned, so he had to play in traveling theater groups. In the 1930s, he played a few dignified supporting roles in the cinema. Due to the declining success in old age, he also lost his previously considerable fortune, in 1935 he had to declare himself bankrupt. After his last films, he moved to a retirement home for financially weak actors in 1937, where he lived in seclusion.
