William Gemmell Cochran
William Gemmell Cochran (born July 15, 1909 in Rutherglen near Glasgow , Scotland , † March 29, 1980 in Orleans (Massachusetts) ) was a Scottish statistician .
Cochran studied mathematics at the University of Glasgow and the University of Cambridge . From 1934 to 1939 he worked at the Rothamsted Experimental Station , an agricultural culture research center in Harpenden ( Hertfordshire , England ). In the following years he was involved in the establishment of several departments for statistics, including in North Carolina , where he worked with Gertrude Mary Cox on experimental design.
He spent most of his professional career at Harvard University from 1957 until his retirement in 1976.
In 1971 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , in 1974 to the National Academy of Sciences .
Cochran wrote a number of articles and books, some of which became standard works. The statistician became known through Cochran's theorem .
