William Glyn (tennis player)

William Edward Glyn (* 1859 in Wycliffe , County Durham , † March 23, 1939 in New York City ) was a British tennis player .

life and career

Glyn was a member of the Staten Island Cricket and Base Ball Club and took part in the first US National Championships in men's singles in 1881 . There he reached after victories over Arthur Rives (1: 6, 6: 1, 6: 1), Richard Conover (6: 5, 6: 2), William Gammell (6: 4, 4: 6, 6: 4) and Samuel Shaw (6: 2, 6: 2) the final, in which he lost to Richard Sears 0: 6, 3: 6, 2: 6. At the US National Championships in 1882 Glyn failed in the men's singles after defeating FitzJames Hynes (6: 2, 6: 0) in the second round again to Richard Sears (1: 6, 4: 6), in the men's doubles with his partner William Thorne he lost after a win over Eldridge / Rankine (6: 1, 5: 6, 7: 5) in the quarterfinals to Clarence Clark and Howard Taylor (4: 6, 0: 6). Glyn reached further finals in 1886 at the Middle States Championships and the Orange Spring Tournament.

Glyn was born to Charles Thomas Glyn (1820-1882) and Ann Hurts († 1912) in County Durham in northern England . He emigrated to the United States and worked there as a bank clerk . In April 1900 he married Mary Rotch Hunter († 1936). Without having obtained citizenship of the United States , he died in New York City in March 1939 .
