William Hay, 18th Earl of Erroll KT , GCH , PC ( February 21, 1801 - April 19, 1846 ) was a Scottish peer .

life and career

Hay was the son of William Hay, 17th Earl of Erroll , and his wife Alice. He attended Eton College . On December 4, 1820, he married Elizabeth FitzClarence , an illegitimate daughter of King William IV and Dorothy Jordan, in Westminster Abbey . The couple had four children.

From 1836 to 1846, Hay was Lord Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire . He also held various positions at the British court since 1830; so he was from 1839 to 1841 as successor to George Campbell Lord Steward of the Household .

In 1819 Hay inherited his father's title when his father died. From 1823 to 1831 he was an elected Representative Peer for Scotland in the British House of Lords . In 1831 he was appointed Baron Kilmarnock . This title belongs to the Peerage of the United Kingdom and, unlike the older Scottish dignities, was at that time directly linked to a seat in the House of Lords.

Hay died in London at the age of 45. His titles passed to the eldest son.
