William Henry Stanton

William Henry Stanton (born July 28, 1843 in New York City , †  March 28, 1900 in Scranton , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . In 1876 and 1877 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Still in his youth, William Stanton moved with his parents to Pennsylvania, where they settled first in Carbondale and then in Archbald . He attended the public schools in Archbald and St. John's College near Montrose . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1868, he began to work in Scranton in this profession. Between 1872 and 1874 he also worked there as a public prosecutor. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He was a member of the Pennsylvania Senate in 1875 and 1876 .

After the resignation of the MP Winthrop Welles Ketcham , Stanton was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC when he was due for the by-election for the twelfth seat of Pennsylvania , where he took up his new mandate on November 7, 1876. Since he was no longer running in the regular congressional elections of 1876 , he could only end the current legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1877 .

William Stanton was a judge in his homeland between 1877 and 1879 . After that he practiced as a lawyer again. During this time he supported the Greenback Party and stood up for the labor movement. He died on March 28, 1900 in Scranton, where he was also buried.
