Winthrop Welles Ketcham

Winthrop Welles Ketcham (born June 29, 1820 in Wilkes-Barre , Pennsylvania , †  December 6, 1879 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania) was an American lawyer and politician . In 1875 and 1876 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives ; then he became a federal judge .

Career

Winthrop Ketcham received a classical education and was then trained as a teacher in Kingston and Philadelphia . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1850, he began to work in this profession. From 1855 to 1857 he held the post of prothonotary in Lucerne County . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1858 he became a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives ; between 1859 and 1861 he was a member of the State Senate . In 1860 and 1864 he took part as a delegate at the Republican National Conventions , at each of which Abraham Lincoln was nominated as a candidate for president. In 1864, Ketcham ran unsuccessfully for Congress . From 1864 to 1866 he worked for the United States Court of Claims .

In the congressional elections of 1874 Ketcham was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the twelfth constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Lazarus Denison Shoemaker on March 4, 1875 . He was able to exercise this mandate until his resignation on July 19, 1876. This was due to his appointment as a judge at the federal district court for the western district of Pennsylvania. He held this office until his death on December 6, 1879 in Pittsburgh.

  1. There is uncertainty in the sources about the spelling of the surname, because it is sometimes written as Ketchum . His tombstone clearly shows Ketcham as the real name.
