The William Holyman was one of the first container ships planned and built as such and the first of its kind in Australia. However, it was not built for the transport of ISO containers , but for containers with smaller dimensions.

history

The container ship William Holyman was built in 1961 at the State Dockyard shipyard in Newcastle , New South Wales , for the shipping company William Holyman and Sons in Launceston . After being handed over in July 1961, it opened a container service between Melbourne , Victoria and Launceston on August 1st . The William Holyman was the last ship to sail the full length of the Tamar River . The service was maintained until 1975, after which the ship was sold and then went under the name Maldive Swift for the shipping company Maldives Shipping. On September 14, 1980, the Maldive Swift was trapped in Khorramshahr by the First Gulf War and later written off .

technology

The ship was designed as an open ship , the seven hatches with a large degree of deck opening made the individual 45.72 m long and 6.40 m high continuous hold with a hold of around 3,314 cubic meters easily accessible. There were four electro-hydraulic cranes from Clark-Chapman & Company on deck, which were designed for rapid cargo handling while simultaneously loading and unloading the mainly transported containers with dimensions of 4.5 feet by 6 feet by 16 feet. The carrying capacity of the ship was around 2,000 tons.

Superstructures and machinery were arranged aft. The propulsion of the ship consisted of a polar seven-cylinder diesel engine .
