William John Young

William John Young (born January 26, 1878 in Manchester , † May 14, 1942 ) was a British-Australian biochemist.

Life

Young graduated from the University of Manchester with a Masters and was from 1902 to 1912 assistant to Nobel Laureate Arthur Harden at the Lister Institute in London. In 1910 he acquired the D. Sc. at the University of London , was from 1913 to 1919 at the Australian Institute of Tropical Medicine in Townsville and was then at the University of Melbourne , where he was from 1920 Lecturer , 1924 Associate Professor and 1938 Professor of Biochemistry.

During his time in London, he and Harden studied alcoholic fermentation and the enzymes involved. In doing so, they discovered the principle of phosphorylation . In Australia, he worked on refrigerated food preservation, blood biochemistry and melanin .
