William Julius Barker

William Julius Barker (born June 25, 1886 in Marietta , Georgia , †  April 13, 1968 in Tampa , Florida ) was an American lawyer . After his appointment by President Franklin D. Roosevelt , he served as a federal judge in the federal district court for the southern district of Florida from 1940 to 1959 .

Career

After graduating from high school, William Barker attended the College of Law at the University of Florida at Gainesville , where he received his Bachelor of Laws in 1916 . He then practiced as a lawyer in Jacksonville until 1925 , from 1925 to 1940 he served as a judge at the state county court in Highlands County .

On January 11, 1940, President Roosevelt named Barker a judge on the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida to succeed Alexander Akerman . After confirmation by the US Senate on February 1 of the same year, he was able to take office four days later. From 1955 to 1959 he was Chief Judge chairman of this federal court . On April 30, 1959, he switched to senior status and thus effectively retired. His seat fell to William McRae ; the presidency of the court took over George William Whitehurst . William Barker, who had a son and two daughters with his wife Pauline, died in Tampa on April 13, 1968 and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Gainesville.
