William Patrick McCord

William Patrick McCord (born December 3, 1950 ) is an American veterinarian and herpetologist . His main research interests are the turtles (Testudines).

Life

In 1970 McCord received his Associate of Applied Science Degree from the State University of New York (SUNY) in Delhi , New York . In 1972 he received his Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University . In 1978 he earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) doctorate from Purdue University in West Lafayette , Indiana . After practicing for three years in Glen Cove , New York and Danbury , Connecticut , he and his wife, Anne, a veterinary technician, moved to Hopewell Junction , New York, in 1981 , where he founded the East Fishkill Animal Hospital. McCord's work usually focuses on diagnostics and surgery. He has also trained other local vets over the years.

McCord is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the New York State Veterinary Medical Society (NYSVMS), and the Hudson Valley Veterinary Medical Society (HVVMS).

McCord's scientific interest is in the turtle fauna, particularly that of Southeast Asia, Australia, Western New Guinea, and Papua New Guinea. He co-wrote the first descriptions of seven new turtle species, including Chelodina canni , Chelodina gunaleni , Chelodina walloyarrina , Chitra vandijki , Cyclemys atripons , Leucocephalon yuwonoi and Mesoclemmys heliostemma . In 2013, together with Minh Le, Brendan N. Reid, Eugenia Naro-Maciel, Christopher J. Raxworthy , George Amato and Arthur Georges, he established the new genus Flaviemys for a species that was previously assigned to the genus Elseya .

In addition, McCord owns the largest collection of live turtles in New York State and one of the largest in the United States.

William Patrick McCord has published over 60 scientific articles and lectures in the United States and worldwide on animal-related topics.

Dedication names

McCord's snake necked turtle

Carl H. Ernst named the McCord's hinged turtle ( Cuora mccordi ) in 1988 and Anders GJ Rhodin named the McCord's snake-necked turtle ( Chelodina mccordi ) in 1994 in honor of William Patrick McCord.
