William Richert (director)
William Richert (* 1942 in Florida ) is an American film director , screenwriter , film producer and actor .
life and career
His first novel Aren't You Even Gonna Kiss Me Goodbye? who dealt with his teenage years as a beatnik fan with humor and thought . He then worked as a screenwriter and produced documentaries.
Richert made his directorial debut in 1979, towards the end of the New Hollywood era , with the film satire Phildalephia Clan , in which famous film greats like Jeff Bridges , John Huston , Anthony Perkins , Eli Wallach , Dorothy Malone , Sterling Hayden and Toshirō Mifune starred. The film, which is fictionally based on the murder of John F. Kennedy , received positive reviews from most film critics, but it was a box office flop. The following year he shot the film Now I'm Coming in Munich , again with Jeff Bridges in the lead role, but this film, too, had no major response. In 1988 he filmed his novel Aren't You Even Gonna Kiss Me Goodbye? as Jimmy Reardon with River Phoenix in the lead role: Although this film proved to be commercially successful, 20th Century Fox edited the scenes without Richard's consent so that, in Richard's opinion, it turned from a "serious film for adults into a sex comedy for teenagers" was transformed.
In 1991 there was a renewed collaboration with River Phoenix, when Richert took on the supporting supporting role of the Falstaff -like homeless man Bob Pigeon in My Private Idaho from Gus van Sant . He then appeared as an actor in other film and television productions. In 1999 he made his last film as a director, the Alexandre Dumas film adaptation of The Man with the Iron Mask . He currently lives in Santa Monica and is married to Gretchen Richert.
